Beautifully serene – the perfect getaway for anyone but especially couples.

The General’s Cabin is rich in history, craftsmanship, natural beauty, and seclusion. My husband and I enjoyed the time at the cabin–the hikes, the front porch, star gazing, and the tranquility of the pond. We also enjoyed how close the cabin was to the Red River Gorge. We spent hours at the Gorge hiking and seeing the natural wonders there, only to retreat to our own natural wonders at The General’s Cabin. We will be returning year after year!

I have traveled to several countries and seen some gorgeous sites, but I’d have to say that staying at the General’s Cabin are some of my most cherished memories. My boyfriend and I are hard workers that don’t get a lot of time together, and when we stay here we get a chance to put down the technology and just enjoy each other’s company. We alway come with lots of Red River Gorge trails on our list, but end up enjoying the land around the cabin so much that we never want to leave! We recently went on a return visit and were thrilled to see where we had signed the guest book over five years ago. Joy was so kind to us and was easily available by phone if we ever had any questions. I am so grateful to her for her kindness and for sharing such a wonderful place with others. This land is secluded and away from light pollution (as you can see from this night time shot I got). I can’t wait to visit my favorite place again someday!

Remote, Peaceful and Inspirational

I spent a week at The General’s Cabin drafting my first-ever novel. This was the first time–but not the last–that I have spent a week by myself in a remote setting. Any anxiety I might have had quickly dissipated upon talking to Joy when I made my reservation and I was further comforted when she called to check on me and assure me that I could contact her quickly and easily if I had concerns or questions. Excellent cell phone coverage allowed me to tether my laptop for internet coverage. The king bed was comfy and warm (I especially appreciated the electric blanket during a couple unexpected icy nights). And the amenities–scented bath gel and shampoo, quality coffee beans with grinder and choice of drip or french press, a fabulous library, everything I could have needed and more! This is the perfect get-away. The cabin is unique in its architecture and history. Walking around the grounds is a delight. And, the surrounding countryside is beautiful.

Experience a “life well-lived” by taking a few steps in General Little’s shoes.

If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to live in relative seclusion, without traffic lights, noise…people, for that matter, you owe it to yourself to book the General’s Cabin. It’s an inspired structure on a beautiful piece of land. While you’re there you’ll immediately appreciate that a country boy came home to live out his days with his beautiful bride; he built a home, not a vacation cottage. History buffs will, and should, read the short biography stationed at the desk in the main room. As one of my buddies said about half way through, “Wow, this guy was the real deal.” You might book The General’s Cabin with the idea that you’ll have a great place to stay while you’re exploring the nearby Red River Gorge; on the other hand, you might conclude that you can hike any time and you’d rather stay at the cabin to fully absorb its charm. I enthusiastically recommend it as a perennial destination.
A slice of heaven

We fell in love with The Generals Cabin the moment we opened the handmade walnut doors and walked inside. It’s everything you dream of when you think about a rustic, cozy cabin but with all the comforts of home. Soft sheets, fully stocked kitchen, toiletries, endless amounts of literature and a fireplace. We stayed for a extra long weekend over Christmas, spending our days in the Daniel Boone National Forest exploring and our evenings hanging around the fireplace enjoying each other’s company. The big kitchen table was perfect for great meals with our family and the view in the kitchen area reminds you how lovely it is to be surrounded by nature! We explored down by the pond and around the land on the paths, our Yellow Lab was in heaven as well! He was a fan of taking long naps under the table and by the fireplace after long walks! The Generals Cabin was everything we expected and more! To find such a lovely spot to spend our holiday that also allowed dogs (with no additional fee) is hard to find these days. As a bonus, Joy and Michael were so easy to work with as we made the booking and so flexible through our whole experience. One of our favorite parts of The Generals Cabin is the history and the life of General Little. Such a great story; it reminds us all how important our roots, family and stories are. We enjoyed learning more about the history of the Red River Gorge and surrounding areas throughout our stay as well. The Generals Cabin is a slice of heaven that we were ever so humbled to be able to enjoy! We will be back! Thank you for sharing such a special place! Lauren, Duke and our four legged son!

Heaven on earth!! Everything you could possibly want here! Rustic and elegant all at the same time. So many things included down to shampoo, charcoal and coffee! We just came back from a night stroll after a rain shower! If you have ever wanted to rent a cabin and get away from it all…. This is the place!

Fantastic Get away from it ALL!

We absolutely love the generals Cabin, as it’s now become an annual summer trip for our family. Our 8,6 and 5 year olds look forward to it every year. Both years we’ve been, we’ve stocked up on food and never left the cabin. From fishing on the private pond, to enjoying the amenities that the rustic but modern cabin provides, it’s the perfect combination of nature vs. modern convenience. The only critique I could offer, would be a larger grill… I love to grill steaks and it’s a little small for that…but that’s being nitpicky…overall we absolutely love our stay and will be back. -The Deoperes

Absolutely perfect spot

You will NOT be disappointed with this cabin! The privacy, seclusion, and proximity to Daniel Boone National Forest make it the ideal spot for a quiet and nature filled getaway. The beautiful decor and warm hospitality of our hosts made us feel like family from the moment we arrived. The cabin is fully stocked with anything you could need or want and the surrounding pond, hiking trails, and night sky views are unmatched for this area. Would recommend the General’s Cabin to anyone!

A truly magical place

Simply put, I’m in love. My husband and I visited The General’s Cabin for our wedding anniversary and we just loved it. It was beautiful, well-appointed, comfy, and inviting. The owners went out of their way to leave flowers and champagne to celebrate our anniversary (and my birthday, which is the same week!). They also called on our first night to make sure that all was okay and to walk me through the fireplace ignition switch (and answer any questions we might have). We walked the trails on the property, which were terrific, (our dog LOVED it there), visited the pond, and gazed upon the stars at night, which were easy to see in the country. I would love to title my review, “Terrible, don’t stay here!” so I can keep this place as our own personal secret getaway, but that wouldn’t be nice! When I posted photos of our trip on Facebook we had an overwhelming response of positive responses about how gorgeous the cabin was, etc. We are already planning on returning next year for our anniversary and hope to make it an annual trip.

The General’s Cabin is one of those places that you hesitate to share widely, because it’s so special to you. It’s also a place that you want to tell everyone about because everyone should have an opportunity to experience this gem. I heard about the place for years before our schedules lined up, and it was better than I could’ve expected. The drive to the cabin was exceptional, the place was private and had everything we needed. We cooked one of the best meals of our life that evening, and the magic of this place brought out the best in us. I loved the openness of the home’s design, the inventive use of windows, the books and maps, and the sense of discovery that was conjured by the extensive trails, pond, and vistas. We had so many memorable moments that it feels hard to believe we were only there for a couple of days. Joy and Michael were kind and thoughtful hosts, and the place was clearly built, and has been maintained, with love and pride. We felt at home at the General’s Cabin, and we’ll be back.

My husband, Eric, and I stayed at the General’s Cabin for our honeymoon last week. I will admit that when Eric initially brought up the idea of staying in a rural, rustic cabin for the week, I wasn’t overly excited. But one look at the cabin and the surrounding areas and I couldn’t help but fall in love. We opted to take our two puppies which was a great decision. The property that the cabin sits on has private walking trails, a fishing pond and is completely fenced in which we all LOVED! It was so nice to be able to lay in the hammock, grill dinner or enjoy coffee out on the beautiful front patio overlooking the woods and let the dogs run free. Joy and Michael were wonderful to work with- communication was easy and they took the time to add personal touches like roses and champagne at check-in. They even called on our second night to check on us and give some pointers on where to visit. We expected to be on the go for the whole week, but there was enough to do at the cabin that we spent a majority of our time relaxing…which was much needed after the busyness of our wedding the weekend before. Red River Gorge is gorgeous! The trails were great and the lookouts were breathtaking. If you have a chance to go into Natural Bridge State Park, we highly recommend the sky lift to Natural Bridge and Miguel’s Pizza. I thought I had, had great pizza before, but this was honestly the best I’ve ever had. So fresh! And they even had gluten-free options for me! Thank you, Joy and Michael, for lending us your home for the week. It was truly a wonderful vacation and we look forward to coming back and bringing family.

Perfect Getaway

We just returned from our stay at the General’s Cabin and were so pleased with everything. The location was idyllic and the cabin was well-appointed and spotless. We loved hiking with our dogs and then coming back and relaxing by the fireplace. It was the perfect way to end a busy year and celebrate a new one. We would love to visit again in the summer and can only imagine how beautiful it will be in the fall. Can’t wait to go back.
